The Swissgear Maxxum Bag Reviewed

The choices available in computer laptop backpacks will amaze you. But let me be frank. There are some really good, some really bad and some that are just nasty. You don\’t want to make a mistake and waste your cash. Wouldn\’t you agree.

In my opinion sitting at number 1 are Swissgear backpacks. If you have heard of the Swissgear Army knife these are the same guys that make those. Same quality and the same reputation. That says everything.

What is it that makes these backpacks standout. What differentiates them from the rest of the crowd?

Before I answer this question be aware, be very aware. Maxxums do not allow storage of 17 inch or more laptops. Please do not ignore this. The end result will be a waste of cash. There is the Swissgear Ibex that will accommodate your needs though if you do have a larger laptop. Different design but the same quality and similar suitable functionality. This is not a problem.

There is a pod along the spine of the backpack that your laptop fits in to. Patented shock absorbent material covers this area and it is finished off with a clasp that makes sure your machine is secured in place. Bangs, bumps and bruises that your bag takes during the normal course of the day means that your bag is largely protected, this is what you are paying for.

The strapping system is very comfortable. In all the time I have owned the bag, just over 8 months, have a felt discomfort caused by the straps digging in to my shoulder blades or back. The same shock absorbing material that is used in the pod is used on the strapping system. A release and tightening system runs in to the straps as well. Very handy if you need to get the pack off in a hurry.

More pockets than you can shake a stick at. Designed with the user in mind there is a big central pocket for items that do not need to be secured. Books, leads, mouse, computer peripherals and that kind of item. Another largish zipped pocket at the front with another smaller zipped pocket inside this one. The smaller of the two pockets can be used to store your boarding card, passport and other important papers.

There are another two pockets done each side of the bag near the bottom, a mesh one and a secured zipped pocket inside that one, these can be used for storing water bottles.

Lastly a mention of cost as I know that this will be in the forefront of your mind. Around $70 or so however I prefer to think more in terms of value for money as an out and out cost and, believe you me, this is value for money.

By the way – would I buy another Swiss Gear Laptop backpack? The answer would be a most definite yes.
