Are You Totally Certain That You\’re Getting The Vitamins You Need From The Food You Consume?

It seems that we\’ve wrestled with the question of whether to take vitamins since they were first discovered. Did you know that we do not have the capability to manufacture vitamins from scratch?

Vitamins were first unearthed a little over a century ago. They were referred to as micro nutrients, meaning we don\’t need big quantities of them. But it\’s those small amounts that contribute to some powerful and important biological processes. So, how do we acquire them and what quantities do we need?

We should be getting our daily input of vitamins from the food we eat. That supposes that we\’re all eating well-balanced healthy meals that are rich in fruit and vegetables. So, the next time you find yourself at a fast food restaurant to pick up the family dinner think about the truth of that thought.

It\’s no secret that many of us are not eating healthy food or sticking to well balanced diets for one reason or another. That\’s certainly not earth shattering news for most of us. And, suppose we do attempt to eat healthy meals; there\’s the issue of not really knowing if we\’re getting the vitamins we need in the quantities we need when our choices comes from highly refined, chemically treated foods that may not even have enough vitamins left in them to make a difference.

Then there are special cases of people who do take vitamins faithfully but because of certain conditions that are unique to their lifestyles, may not be getting full benefit of the vitamins they are taking. Women in their child bearing years, people who smoke, alcoholics, patients taking certain medications, breast feeding infants are only a few of those who might belong within these groups.

Vitamins are necessary elements for life because they play a vital part in certain biological and chemical processes in the body. They\’re also involved in aiding mental alertness, promoting healthy skin and for aiding in creating new cells. However, don\’t count on vitamins to lift your energy level. Vitamins are void of calories and calories are what we burn to get energy.

What are the results of not getting the vitamins you require? If that occurs then more than likely you\’ll be in the midst a vitamin deficiency and that has many symptoms depending upon the vitamin you have in short supply. Some of the more common symptoms are skin problems, vision problems and hair and nail problems. There are the really serious ailments like heart disease and cancer that have been associated with vitamin deficiency.

Finally, it\’s important to know that vitamin supplements are classified according to how they\’re stored in the body; they\’re either water soluble or fat soluble. Water soluble means that they are not retained in the body over long period of times. Any amounts that the body doesn\’t use are excreted in the urine. Although unnecessary, it\’s safe to take these in larger doses because they can never attain toxic levels as a result of being stored and built up within the body. On the other hand, fat soluble vitamins need to be handled more knowledgeably because they are stored in the body for long periods of time. With the continual addition of more of this type of vitamin, there\’s a chance of reaching toxic levels which could cause great harm. It\’s imperative to understand the difference but the safest approach would be to follow the directions on the vitamin label carefully. If you plan to deviate from the recommendations of the manufacturer, then it\’s a good idea to do so only under the advice of a trained professional.
