Applying Edible Cake Art

If your reading this article, no doubt you love art, and you love eating. But your not the kind to pack a lunchbox and walk around the local art museum, are you? You want to create your own art. In this article we\’ll talk about how to create edible cake decorations quickly and easily.

Edible Cake Art:

- When dealing with Cake decorations, it\’s crucial that you keep your hands dry. This is especially true when dealing with an edible image. These need moisture to blend with the icing, so if your dealing with a frozen cake, let it thaw a little before applying your image.

- If your cake is dry, you\’ll need to add some moisture so your edible image can stick to it. You can do this by brushing on some syrup, adding a very thin layer of icing, or just simply spraying on some water. If it\’s too moist though, the colors will run.

- Once the image is applied to the cake, you won\’t be able to move it at all. So take your time when deciding the placement of the image! After it\’s on the cake, tap it down gently with the tips of your fingers, working from the center and tapping it down to the edges.

- If you haven\’t stored your images in a dry place, they may become moist and difficult to remove from the backing. If this happens you can place them in the freezer for 5 minutes. After their frozen, they will peel easily off the backing.

- If the image bubbles after it is applied, gently tap but DO NOT RUB the image. If the cake is still frozen after application, it should be placed in the refrigerator and allowed to thaw slowly. Avoid exposing the image to ultraviolet light, electromagnetic waves or gamma radiation. Otherwise the image may fade over time, or the cake could turn into a super-powered mutant and wreak havoc on the city.

- If it bubbles during freezing, just tap it down again.

Storing And Handling Your Images.

- Store edible images in dry, cool places. And keep them in the silver bag they come in.

- Apply the image immediately after removing it from it\’s bag.

- Apply your image right after taking it out of the bag.

Adhering The Images To Other Cakes

- Ice Cream: To apply the image to a cake frosted with non-dairy whipped topping or ice cream, do not add any additional water. If you are applying the image directly on ice cream, let the ice cream melt just a bit before application. When working with soft serve ice cream, you will get better results by applying the image while the ice cream is soft and then freeze it.

Icing made from Buttercream.

* Apply the image immediately after icing the cake. Buttercream will form a crust about an hour after it have been applied. If this has happened, spray the icing with a fine mist of water before applying the image.

Frozen cakes

To avoid cracks forming in your cake, let it thaw a little before applying the image.

Icing Royale

- Add a fair amount of misted water over the cake iced with royale icing before you apply an image.

Whipped toppings Non-dairy

- Don\’t add misted water or moisture of any kind when applying an image. Keep your finished cake in the fridge to maintain integrity.

Sugar paste or rolled fondant

- When placing an image over fondant or sugar paste, plan where you will put the image. Apply a decent amount of plain water with a small paintbrush, then brush water only where the image will be. Any water outside the image will leave a mark on the fondant or sugar paste. Although be sure to apply enough water, or the image will not stick.

- Tap down the edges with your wet paintbrush

Poured White Chocolate, and other Icings

- While the icing is still wet is when you want to apply the image. Make sure the cake is resting someplace flat or the image can slide.

Application Instructions

- Remove image from sheet right before application.

- Reseal the bag immediately if there are any images left.

- Remove the image from the backing sheet by gently placing it facing up on a table edge and rolling the backing sheet over the table edge. This will loosen the image so that it can be carefully peeled from the backing.
