Child Safety – Are You Making Sure Of It?
It is not easy being a parent for the first time. Besides having the feeling that even words are not enough to describe it, your child will depend on you to care for her or his basic needs. Not only that, your child will also rely on you that her or his home is a safe place to live in.
Actually, before my first baby was born, I tried to put myself in his shoes – I kneeled down on my knees and put my hands on the floor and crawled just to know what the baby notices. A button, a dime, and a toothpick were among the items I recovered from the floor. I also observed that there were open wall sockets where babies can stick anything into it and several small things lying on the floor that they might swallow. I always kept an eye on him when he started to walk. We didn\’t have safety gates, things to keep the doors and windows from opening too far, outlet plugs, padding to put around the fireplace hearth or furniture, gates to separate child and pets, or window guards. As probable as we could, to create a risk-free environment for our baby, we had to be observant all the time and merely followed him wherever he went and whatever he did. We did not have devices for child protection installed in our houses before but now you can avail of them and so many to choose from.
A happy and risk-free surrounding for your kid while growing up and for you to keep your composure, can be achieved by performing numerous tasks without making him feel trapped inside his own home. The rule of thumb is that if anything is small enough to fit through a toilet paper tube, it is not safe for your children. When children discover things, they tend to place it in their mouths. Peruse the rooms in your home for anything on the floor that could cause your child to choke if put in the mouth. If you have balloons in your house, do not ever let your child have them. Swallowing the balloons have been a common cause of deaths in children. It happened to a good friend of mine. He unintentionally lost his brother to a simple balloon he gave.
If you want to keep children away from a certain area, like the stairs and especially the pool side, safety gates can be appropriate for that. Use safety belts on changing tables, and high chairs, never leaving a child by him/herself on beds, furniture. Store your matches, cleansers, poisons and medicines in a cabinet that can\’t be reached, with locks.
Place your baby\’s crib away from electric cords, curtains and curtain cords and never ever, even for a second, leave your child on his/her own in the bathtub as advised by the American Academy of Family Physicians. In one year alone, there were 3,582 deaths from unintentional drowning either in bathtubs, pools, buckets (believe it or not, babies or a small child can drown in less than two inches of water), or toilets (make sure you put a toilet lock in place). Inspect all toys are harmless for children to play with. Houseplants are not toys, so keep them in a place where the children can\’t reach it.
Over two million children a year are hurt in home-related injuries. Before the baby arrives, do some detective work around your home and prepare for the arrival of your life-changing bundle of joy. Nevertheless, the best shield for your child is perpetual guidance apparently. It is best that you are kept informed of your children\’s activities and whereabouts. As your child grows into an adolescent, you\’ll be all set for the next life\’s chapter. Be aware of your children\’s plans and undertakings all the time. Then, as they grow up and have families of their own, they will also be responsible parents, just as their parents have been.
